Nieuwjaarsgroet 2024 en de redactiejaarlijstjes!

En daar zijn we dan hoor: het jaar 2025! Wat is het weer knetterhard gegaan hé? Zoals we gewend zijn in het muzieklandschap, startte 2024 in muzikaal opzicht rustig op, maar werd het wederom een jaar met veel supergoede releases. Eenieder zal dat beamen en, vooruitlopend op de zaken hieronder, kunnen wij bij Zware Metalen ook concluderen dat er topplaten verschenen in zowat ieder genre. Niet alleen de grote namen leverden weer kwaliteit, ook de minder grote en bekende bands kwamen soms met pareltjes op de proppen. Binnen onze redactiejaarlijsten moesten de grote namen dikwijls wijken omdat de laatste categorie nog meer wist te imponeren. Tja, dan kun je spreken over een geslaagd jaar als het op muziek aankomt.

We raakten ook voor de eerste keer met elkaar in discussie over het gebruik van AI in combinatie met ‘onze metal’. Zo deden de albumhoezen van Kerry King‘s From Hell I Rise en Deicide‘s Banished By Sin behoorlijk wat stof opwaaien. De eerste bands/projecten die ook hun muziek met AI hebben gemaakt, zijn inmiddels eveneens al een feit. Ieder zijn meug, zullen we maar zeggen! Daarover gesproken: wat was het weer genieten van alle fraaie concerten en festivals tijdens het afgelopen jaar. Zware Metalen deed in 2024 (foto)verslag van maar liefst 208 (!) evenementen. Van Hibernation Fest tot aan de wondere wereld van Tool in de Ziggo Dome, van wegzakken in de modder op Graspop tot aan genieten van Asinhell in TivoliVredenburg en mee deinzen op de logge sludge van Baroness in Doornroosje: we waren erbij! Onze tentakels reikten ook dit jaar zelfs weer tot Bergen en Andernach om eens lekker mee te slammen. De top 3 van 2024 als het gaat over onze meest gelezen verslagen bestaat uit Rammstein in Oostende, AC/DC in Amsterdam en ZZ Top in Amsterdam.

Met onze voltallige redactie hebben we het afgelopen jaar ook hard geploeterd om op dagbasis weer gemiddeld drie verse reviews te kunnen publiceren voor jullie. We schreven achter de schermen meer dan 1100 (!) meningen op het digitale papier, van hardcore tot black metal, van power metal tot folk. Speciale dank aan al onze redacteuren die dit als hobby erbij doen! De top 3 van meest gelezen reviews bestaat uit Opeth, Blood Incantation en Kerry King. Een totaalaantal om oprecht trots op te zijn natuurlijk. Desalniettemin zijn we altijd opzoek naar nieuw, schrijvend talent om onze gezellige ploeg te versterken. Neem eens een kijkje hier, want wellicht kun jij ons team aanvullen op de vlakken waar we nog handen extra kunnen gebruiken om onze doelen te kunnen bewerkstelligen: World Domination!

  1. Ik vond het dit jaar uitzonderlijk moeilijk om een evenwichtige jaarlijst op te stellen. Ik had nog meer dan andere jaren het gevoel dat ik appelen met peren aan het vergelijken was (al zijn het dan bijna allemaal blackmetalalbums). Daarnaast was er geen enkel album dat me dit jaar helemaal heeft weten in te pakken.
  2. Het inzicht dat er heel wat interessante bands België voor zaalshows links laten liggen, terwijl ze wél neerstrijken in Nederland. Ons land heeft nood aan meer metalzalen.
  3. De brand bij Neseblod Records (Helvete) in Oslo.
  4. My Dying Bride dat op tournee gaat zonder Aaron Stainthorpe.
  5. Nicko die met onmiddellijke ingang stopt bij Iron Maiden.

Verrassingen:

  1. De verrijzenis van Oldd Wvrms, onze Belgische sludgetopper.
  2. Het nieuwe album van Darkthrone, dat me voor het eerst in lange tijd nog eens kon bekoren.

  3. Tenuem. Dat die lui niet verder zijn gekomen in de metal battle slaat nergens op. Hun debuut EP is een aanvulling voor het Nederlands metallandschap.
  4. Vended. Als Slipknot nageslacht had dit de schijn van nepotisme, maar deze jongens staan verrassend goed hun eigen mannetje.
  5. Bubblegum Chainsaw. Dit gaat helemaal nergens over, maar ik vind het té grappig.

  2. Satyricon op Alcatraz was fantastisch, maar ze mochten maar beginnen om 20 na middernacht en de rest van die dag was het een matige tot zwakke line-up.
  3. De verdere polarisatie en verrechtsing over de hele wereld, de mensheid is weer grote stappen achteruit aan het gaan.

Verrassingen:

  1. Niet echt een verrassing, maar wel voor moeten strijden: een warm nieuw samengesteld gezin in goede balans en met vooral veel liefde.
  2. Zoals elk jaar, dankzij de vele recencies op Zware Metalen, weer heel wat nieuwe bands leren kennen en daardoor zonder enig probleem aan minstens 30 ‘platen van het jaar’ gekomen.
