Zanger/bassist Gary Meskil van de Amerikaanse hardcoreband Pro-Pain is maandag in Brussel op een gewelddadige wijze overvallen. Terwijl hij met een ijspriem werd toegetakeld, is hij beroofd van geld, creditcard en paspoort door een groep van zeven personen. De politie heeft de identiteit van enkele aanvallers weten te achterhalen en heeft een aantal wapens in beslag genomen.
Meskil is naar de intensieve zorg-afdeling van het ziekenhuis gebracht met breuken aan zijn gezicht en kaak en veel bloedverlies. Volgens de band is zijn toestand stabiel maar zijn er mogelijk operaties nodig. De band spreekt overigens van ‘poging tot moord’.
De optredens van Pro-Pain in Roeselare op 7 juli en het Duitse Osnabrück een dag later zijn geannuleerd.
UPDATE 1:
Gary Meskil is ontslagen uit het ziekenhuis en verblijft inmiddels bij een vriend in het Vlaamse Wachtebeke. Het Amerikaanse gezondheidszorgsysteem is om te huilen en daarom heeft zijn familie een fonds opgezet om medische handelingen uit te laten voeren. Iedere donateur krijgt een vermelding in de credits van het volgende Pro-Pain-album.
UPDATE 2:
Gary Meskil heeft zojuist een update gepost op de Facebookpagina van Pro-Pain. Hierin schrijft hij het volgende:
“First off, I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concerns, well wishes and generosity. It really means the world to me and my family. I also would like to express my sincerest gratitude to Dr. Olivier Sanese and his wonderful staff at C.H.U. St-Pierre Hospital for saving my life, and the Brussels Police Department for diligently tracking down suspects. To think that just a few days ago, I was basically left to die on the sidewalk and no one helped until paramedics came to the scene. After being pick-pocketed, I absorbed a blow to the head with an ice pick, and then was quickly attacked by several persons. I truly believe my NY Yankees hat was my saving grace. My nose was broken, my glasses were smashed into my eyes, and I sustained some fractures to my face and jaw. I lost a high percentage of blood from severe hemorrhaging, which required multiple transfusions. The uncontrolled bleeding is what nearly killed me, according to the Medical staff. They initially intended to keep me in the hospital for an extra 12 days (for surgery and recovery), but I convinced them to discharge me because I didn’t appear to suffer any neurological damage and surgery can be done much closer to home.
Over the next couple of days, I hope to get a second opinion on my jaw. It doesn’t close properly, and the fractures around my palate make it impossible to eat any solid food. The jaw injury could be the biggest hurdle to overcome when it comes to returning to the stage. I can deal with the pain in certain areas until I get home, but breaches to the jaw will make it extremely painful to scream / sing. I now have to wait 5-10 days for my new Passport to arrive, so we will make further decisions around that time frame regarding certain plans. Aside from all of that, I am recovering as quickly as I can, and I look positively toward the future. I would also like to say that the incident did not change my opinion of Brussels or its citizens in any way. It could have happened in many places, and I just feel like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Belgium will continue to be my home away from home. Inmiddels heeft de inzamelingsactie die door de vrouw van Gary is opgezet op 75% van haar totaaldoel bereikt. Doneren kun je hier nog doen. In de volgende foto’s is te zien hoe het herstel van Gary er voor staat.
UPDATE 3:
De Pro-Pain-zanger is inmiddels weer een week thuis in Sarasota, Florida en alweer dagelijks achter de microfoon te vinden. Meskil oefent elke dag om de tour van zijn band weer op te pakken. Hij toont zich vastberaden 3 augustus present te zijn in het Duitse München. De optredens op Into the Grave in Leeuwarden (12 augustus) en in de Rotterdamse Baroeg (27 augustus), lijken daardoor niet in gevaar te komen.
De donaties voor de ziekenhuisrekeningen blijven nog binnenstromen, de teller staat inmiddels op bijna 30.000 dollar.
UPDATE 4 (slot):
En daar is Gary Meskil weer: terug in Europa om inderdaad de tour weer op te pakken in München. De zanger/bassist voelt zich goed genoeg om twaalf tot vijftien nummers te spelen, voordat hij in september weer onder het mes gaat. De Amerikaan is dan ook nog lang niet genezen. -Hematoma peri-orbital left fracture of the bones clean of the nose.
-Fracture of the left pterygoid process.
-Left orbital floor fracture. No muscle incarceration.
-Fracture of the left lateral orbital paresis without muscle incarceration.
-Fracture of the lateral and medial walls and the floor of the maxillary sinuses bilaterally.
-No intracranial hemorrhage demonstrated.
