Necrot – Lifeless Birth

Today we are bidding our welcome to a trio with the cozy name Necrot, hailing from Oakland. My mind doesn’t immediately associate a trio with the activity of reproduction, but rather with shameless fun. Nonetheless, we are discussing the new fruit of their labor titled Lifeless Birth, filled with deadly material and decay. And in stark contrast: the pleasure the band had in creating this record is clearly on display!

Necrot has been around since 2011 and has showered us with a lot of filth over the years. Lifeless Birth is their third full-length album after a series of demos. The records have been very well received, and particularly their penultimate release Mortal garnered high praise, as you can read in Dypfrys’s enthusiastic review.

The album spans about 40 minutes spread out over seven tracks and is an ode to the old school death metal movement as we have heard many times before. Which makes kind of sense as how often can you keep innovating within a certain genre? So do not expect too many innovative ideas on Lifeless Birth, in terms of genre innovation, that is. Necrot on the other hand has introduced some innovation into their sound by incorporating a hefty dose of melody on this album enriching the songs a very pleasant groove. The band manages to avoid the usual compromise between brutality and melody and keeps the brutal feel as intense as before. The skillfully executed tempo changes accentuate the brutal fast sections even more, and when the the music decelerates, the melody comes through even stronger. A beautiful formula.

With Lifeless Birth, Necrot once again delivers a powerful album that will make many OSDM (Old School Death Metal) enthusiasts’ hearts beat faster.
