Millhaven – Dualism

It was mid-2019 when the gentlemen of Millhaven, formerly known as The Curse of Millhaven, released a new record. Well, that’s not entirely accurate because ‘The Curse of Millhaven is dead,’ as they announced last year. Anyway, see it as you wish, Millhaven has a new album with catchy tunes: Dualism, a record with eight tracks that keep us entertained for just under half an hour. But hey, they’re each, as they say here in the Westhoek: downright good!

Peace and tranquility, words unknown to these gentlemen, are clearly absent in the album. After the introductory piece Duality, we are nudged more towards a melodic direction with Hellfire. The combination of tight drumming and melodic riffs ensures that variety is always strongly present throughout the album. As usual, the men incorporate various breakdowns into the songs, and above all they seem to defy sticking to a specific style with their ‘orchestra’. A bit of melodic death here, a playful touch of groove there, variety remains an enjoyable factor throughout the album, ensuring it never becomes monotonous.

In the lyrics, Millhaven continues to delve into all layers of health. While the previous albums explored the nine layers of Dante Alighieri’s hell, various plagues in history, and the mental torment of both torturers and victims, Dualism focuses on mental health, heart versus brain, A versus B, Positive versus Negative.

The album is just out on three types of vinyl and available on all streaming platforms. Give it a spin.
