Ol Sonuf – Vaoresaji + While Rome Burns

Als donderslag bij heldere hemel sloeg Ol Sonuf bij mij in als een bom. Via de Todesbonden website (de band waarvan de resencie van hun EP Stormbringer recentelijk op zwaremetalen verscheen) kwam ik terecht op de
prachtige website van Ol Sonuf. Nieuwsgierig als ik was downloadde ik aldaar de schijf waarvan ik nu een review schrijf. Ol Sonuf is het project van Jason A. Wood, de gitarist en programmeur van Todesbonden. Op slag was ik verliefd op de instrumentale muziek die zo ineens op de harde
schijf van mijn computer stond. Zo enthousiast was ik dat ik Jason een email stuurde of ik niet de echte promo van deze schijf kon krijgen, dat was geen probleem, aangezien een ieder deze cd gratis aan kan vragen op de website van Ol Sonuf. Zo doende raakten we aan de praat en het over en weer sturen van lange e-mails aangaande
de muziek, het concept van Ol Sonuf, geschiedenis van Rome, Theisme en Atheisme. Ondertussen kreeg ik netjes Vaoresaji op mijn deurmat en kon ik naar de prachtige muziek in betere kwaileit dan de mp3’s luisteren. Ook stuurde Jason mij een kopietje op van zijn aankomende album While Rome Burns op deze cd staan nummers die nog niet af zijn, maar geven een goed indicatie dat Ol Sonuf snel een platen contract moet krijgen. Ook deze cd zal ik hier met enkele woorden bespreken
Vaoresaji
Ok, Ok, Ok, genoeg gelul over het aardige contact met dit muzikale brein. Waar staat Ol Sonuf dan garant voor? Ol Sonuf staat garant voor een album lang, zo’n 65 minuten, instrumentale black metal, akoestische passages, electronische ambient, en doomy atmosferische muziek. Komen er dan geen enkele vocalen in voor zult u zich afvragen? Neen, in het
geheel niet. Meestal heb ik bij instrumentale albums al gauw de verveling te pakken. Ol sonuf daarentegen verveelt geen moment. En dat vind ik erg knap voor een instrumentale plaat. De composities op Vaoresaji zijn zeer spannend en intelligent opgebouwd. Het gitaarwerk van Jason is prachtig. Snelle duistere riffs geven een ijzige black metal sfeer, nog donkerdere langzamere riffs
geven een depressieve stemming. Schitterend keyboard werk fleurt de muziek op sommige momenten behoorlijk op, waardoor er soms een blije atmosfeer tussen de duistere momenten doordringt.
Vergelijkings materiaal kunt u vinden in de gallerij der groten. Door het keyboard werk, drumcomputer gebruik en black metal komt de muziek gevaarlijk dichtbij de allereerste plaat (“The Art Of Dreaming”) van Golden Dawn. Dit vooral in het derde nummer “Crucify” wat een weelderige melancholieke sfeer kent. Een andere vergelijking kunt u vinden bij Akhenaton die garant staat voor dergelijke muziek, zei het wat minder black metal.
De ijzige black metal stukken dien mij soms onbewust aan Deinonychus denken. Doordat er geen vocalen worden gebruikt staan de gitaar en keyboard centraal op dit album. Deze twee instrumenten dragen de muziek, geven er kleur aan en maken dat dit album niet verveelt. Veel melodie, zowel in de riffs als in de solo gitaar. Prachtige akoestische breaks zijn perfect in de muziek geplaatst. Ook een kerkorgel is van de partij. Wat een speciale sfeer creeert. Zo ook is Jason een fan van Johan Sebastian Bach wat wel blijkt uit
het nummer “Fugue in C# minor” wat naadloos aansluit bij het epische “The Pain Of Undestanding”, wat een slepend, diep melancholisch nummer is. Dit orgel nummer laat duidelijk zien dat Jason zich ook uitstekend uit de voeten kan met toetsen, schitterend.
Vaoresaji is een prachtig instrumentaal album waar je je vingers bij af kunt likken. enig minpuntje is de productie van deze schijf. Deze is niet heel erg optimaal waardoor het album soms wat blikkerig kan klinken. Niet dat dit een enorm slecht stempel op deze schijf drukt, maar ik wil niemand blij maken met een dooie mus.
While Rome Burns
Maar daarentegen hebben we te maken met productionele vooruitgang op de 2e cd die Jason mij zond. “While Rome Burns” is veel helderder en de lage tonen komen meer tot zijn recht. Dit komt vooral tot uiting in het wat mindere nummer op Vaoresaji en de klapper van While Rome Burns. Ik kan een ieder aanraden op “Travelling The Hidden Path” te klikken en te verdrinken in een prachtig spacy melodieus klankenspel. Mijn god wat is dit nummer fantastisch. Ik kan dit nummer duizend keer achter elkaar horen.
Ik word hier gewoon blij van. Wil je kennis maken met de wereld die Ol Sonuf heet luister dan naar dit nummer.
While Rome Burns is een concept plaat over Rome, en de corruptie van de 4 keizers, Nero, Galba, Otho en Vitellius. Muzikaal gezien is ligt dit album in het verlengde van Vaoresaji maar klinkt net wat complexer en beter. Jason vertelde mij dat hij grote plannen heeft voor dit album. Zo zal hij koren en vrouwen vocalen voor zijn cd op gaan nemen. Laurie Ann Haus van Autumn Tears en Todesbonden zal op dit album verschijnen en ook zal hij zelf grunts op gaan nemen en clean vocals verzorgen. Ik ben zeer benieuwd naar wat voor resultaat dat op zal leveren. Helaas wordt er op dit album
gebruik gemaakt van een drum computer. Maar ook daar zal aan gewerkt gaan worden. Nog een nummer wat er voor mij zeer uitspringt is het nummer “Vitellius”. Schitterend gitaar werk. Riffs en scheurende schred solos zijn van bijzonder hoge kwailteit. Ook de ambient en klassieke acoustische gitaar passages worden op dit album niet geschuwd.
Weliswaar is alles nog niet af en wordt er de komende tijd nog flink geschaafd aan alle nummers, toch wilde ik hier dit schijfje bespreken. Ik kan niets anders meer doen dan een ieder aan te raden naar de website van Ol Sonuf te surfen en aldaar wat mp3’s te downloaden. Zo is het hele Vaoresaji daar te vinden en enkele nummers van While Rome Burns. Dit is enorm gave muziek wat mijns inziens heel erg groot kan gaan worden. Ik hoop dat Jason snel zijn album op de markt gaat brengen want dit beloofd wat!

Vaoresaji
To explain the meaning behind “Vaoresaji” I would have to explain “Ol Sonuf” and the origin of that phrase first. They come from the Enochian Language (also called the “Angelic” language, used by The Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley, and The Church of Satan). There exist 18 “Keys” or “Calls” in Enochian, as well as one great Key called “The Call of the 30 Aethyrs” which each invoke various forces. The First Enochian Key begins with the phrase “Ol Sonuf Vaoresaji, gohu IAD Balata”…meaning “I Reign over you, saith the God of Justice…” So Ol Sonuf means “I Reign”…and to complete the phrase, I named the demo “Vaoresaji” (“over you”).

I wrote this song at a time when I was very enthused about the movie “The Last Temptation of Christ.” It was going to be about the part where he is crucified but then saved by the “angel,” had there been lyrics written.

Again, Enochian for “I Reign Over You.” I originally wrote lyrics all in Enochian for this song, but never fine-tuned them or recorded them. The overall meaning behind them was supposed to be a mockery of God and all holiness in its manner of proclaiming rulership over all existance. (Which is also part of why Ol Sonuf is named what it is.)
This song name was inspired by an illustration by Gustav Dore for Milton’s Paradise Lost, which portrays Satan’s Flight Across Chaos, and shows him clinging in despair to the jagged cliffs, as if terrible winds threatened to carry him away into the darkness. It has always been a very captivating image for me and kind of romanticized the idea of “Satan” as an antihero for me.
More Enochian. APOPHRASZ (actually pronounced “Ah-PO-Peh-Heh-RA-Sa-Zod”, which is why I just called it Apophrasz) means “Motion” in Enochian. I named it this because at the time I originally wrote it, it was my fastest song, and it used to have a longer name, meaning “My highest motion.” More than just being just my fastest song, I also consider Motion and Matter to be the ultimate building blocks of the universe. They are the 2 key ingredients for Inertia, which has brought all the myriad particles of the galaxies together over countless Epochs. Eventually I may write the companion song for Apophrasz, called “Besz” (pronounced Beh-Sah-Zod, meaning “Matter”). Nothing specifically has been written for such a song yet, though.
This was meant to be about the practice of magic and possessing hidden wisdom. This is the same as I wrote for it in the earlier email about this song on “While Rome Burns.”
actually wrote some lyrics about this. They were basically about an outdoor occultic ritual performed beneath the light of a full moon. Basically homage to the Lunar powers and to Darkness and Magic. The vocal lines are all written, but again, were never recorded. This song also has sort of a middle-eastern sound to it, and reminded me originally of Anubis, and jackals in ancient Egypt howling at the moon. (at the time I was studying Qabalah and had a tendency to connect a string of thoughts together that didn’t really have any connection in anyone else’s mind…hehehe)
This was a reference to two completely unrelated things. First, it was a reference to Jesus going into the desert and being tempted by Satan with power over the world. Also, it was named that because the speed reminded me (at the time) of running very fast through a dark nordic forest, possibly out of fear or insanity. I had more of a black metal element to this song, which is what made me think of the forest thing.
This was representative of Myself (darkness) freed from bonds which had previously trapped me for so long. It is a deeply personal reference, and the “bonds” being referred to are another person. I wrote lyrics for it at the time, in a very rebellious spirit, which were somewhat inspired by the movie Prophesy. They were about the legions of fallen angels crashing down the gates of Heaven and taking back Heaven by force. Once again, these vocals were never recorded.
his song’s name has several symbolic references. The words themselves mean “Name of Jesus.” In Hebrew, the letters add up to 666. I have plans to rewrite this song, possibly on the album after “While Rome Burns,” possibly even later than that. But I’ve known for a long time that the lyrics will be about the betrayal of the Knights Templar by King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V. They were arrested early in the morning (and on a Friday the 13th, which is where that date gets its negative stigma) and tortured, imprisoned, and executed. There is a story that the last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, spoke a curse on the king and the pope as he burned at the stake. In reality, both of the two did die within one year.
This song is named this because of another personal reference. It is about the utter disappointment of finding out that someone you had admired is actually a piece of shit. That is, the Pain of Understanding how things/people really are.
Heavily inspired by the organ works of Bach (as many fans of Bach would recognize stylistically). I wrote it in my favorite key, C# minor, which just happened to be the key for “The Pain of Understanding”…so I tied them together at the end.
This song’s name is inspired by religious leaders playing the part of the Pied Piper, posing as their salvation. Partially in consideration of the many molestation accusations made public against the priesthood in the last few years.

This is going to be based on the section in Milton’s “Paradise Lost” where Satan crosses the void of Chaos to reach Eden to tempt Adam and Eve, to bring about the downfall of Man.
This will feature vague references to occult practices/practitioners and symbolism.
This will be about a person accepting religious faith and denying their own reason, and their subsequent demise for denying the relevance of reality.
This song is about exactly what the title says, the temporary nature of all things. It is not officially part of the “Year of the Four Emperors” concept which follows, but is placed here as an intro to the fall of Nero in the next song, “While Rome Burns.”

This song will be about the reign and fall of Emperor Nero. Instead of portraying him as a tyrant, it will portray him as an artist who was not appreciated because he was expected to follow in the brutal footsteps of the prior Caesars, and thereby lost his hold on the empire.
Also named for the next chronological Emperor. Nero stole Otho’s wife, Poppaea, from him, yet Otho somehow managed to forgive the memory of Nero and re-erected the statues of Nero and Poppaea in honor of them. Otho assassinated Galba to take the throne, but Otho himself only reigned for little more than 3 months.
Vitellius, as you may have guessed, is the next Emperor who reigned, after Otho. Vitellius reigned for 7 months before being overthrown by Vespasian, who was the final Emperor to hold the throne, and who began a new dynasty from 69AD on, reigning for many years.

In the same way that “How All Things Must End” was indirectly related to the theme portrayed in “The Year of the Four Emperors,” this song’s lyrics will be the unregretful and unashamed words of a proud Emperor who knows he is about to die by betrayal.
