1349 – Winter Mass (live)

There is no need to introduce 1349. This black metal entity, which has been wreaking havoc in Oslo and far beyond since 1997, now comes up with a live album. Winter Mass (live) is the outcome of a concert that took place just after the lifting of the COVID-19 lockdown at Parkteatret, Oslo, on 20 November 2021. For that concert, the gentlemen Ravn, Seidemann, Frost and Archaon brought in Destructhor to give their furious black metal a bit more shape. Extra colour and warmth are added by burning torches, candles and fireworks. And for those who didn’t already know: Mr. Frost smashes everything that can be smashed. Meanwhile, Ravn phrases his lyrics so perfectly that they still send a shiver down your spine.

Take a good look at the clips above and below and you will really understand what I mean. Of course, the whole thing was neatly provided with excellent sound, which makes a world of difference, but still, you have to be able to pull it off. What immeasurable speeds! Also pay attention to the guitarists, who seem to deliver all parts flawlessly without much frill.

For more than an hour you are immersed in an exceptionally dark atmosphere. It already starts with the introduction, Enter Inferno. How else would you want it? This is followed by twelve black metal diamonds being rammed straight down your throat with the utmost precision. Songs such as Sculptor Flesh from the Hellfire album (2005), Slaves and Golem from Massive Cauldron Of Chaos (2017), the mighty Through Eyes Of Stone and Dødskamp from The Infernal Pathway (2019), the venomous Atomic Chapel from Demonoir (2010) and many others finally receive a full-fledged live version. And the band makes a real effort to present a solid selection and seems to know very well which songs actually work live.

Yes guys! Buy this stuff, because this is black metal pure and simple. I’ll issue one more warning to all the wimps, posers and softies on this globe: this record is not meant for you.
