Nasum – Grind Finale

Met het tragische overlijden van Mieszko in de tsunami in Azië, om maar niet te spreken van meer dan 200.000 lotgenoten, inmiddels alweer meer dan een jaar geleden, moest helaas ook de meest vernieuwende grindcore band van het laatste decenium als overleden worden beschouwd. Er zal nooit meer een nieuwe studio opname uitkomen. Er zal nooit meer een live-show van deze geweldenaren zijn. Nasum is de laatste jaren voor heel veel beginnende grindcore bands een lichtend voorbeeld geweest en mag zelfs verantwoordelijk worden gehouden voor de hernieuwde energie in de muziek van z’n grindcore broeders Napalm Death op hun laatste drie albums.

Als epiloog van het Nasum-verhaal is hier dan Grind Finale, een soort documentatie van hun gehele loopbaan. De twee cd’s bevatten alle non-album tracks, split 7″ EP’s, compilatienummers en andere versies van eerder uitgebrachte nummers die de band gedurende haar elf-jarige bestaan heeft gemaakt. Alle nummers staan in chronologische volgorde, waardoor de luisteraar een goed beeld krijgt van hoe de band van een rauwe death/grind band evolueerde naar de band die nieuwe levenskracht in het hele genre blies. Ook de productie verbetert hoorbaar naarmate de cd’s vorderen. Het is aan te raden om niet alle nummers achter elkaar te beluisteren, want 152 nummers is gewoon een hele zit. Deze compilatie is dan ook meer bedoeld als aanvulling op de bestaande cd’s, om je Nasum-collectie compleet te maken, zogezegd.

Om het voor de echte fans nog eens een extra mooi verzamelobject te maken, is het geheel verpakt in een soort hardcover boekje, met 80 pagina’s achtergrond-info. Mijn promo-exemplaar bestaat helaas uit twee gebrande cd-roms in een plastic envelopje, dus ik kan helaas niet door eigen observatie iets zeggen over de kwaliteit en de schoonheid van het ‘boekje’ waarin de cd’s verkocht worden, maar desondanks denk ik dat dit een essentiële release is die geen enkele zichzelf respecterende grindfanaat aan zich voorbij zou moeten laten gaan.
