Signs Of The Swarm – To Rid Myself of Truth

Deathcore fans will already recognize the name Signs Of The Swarm. The four-piece is very active and tours almost constantly, something we often see with the “new generation” of deathcore bands. This eagerness has already propelled them to the top of the charts, where they currently stand. But with To Rid Myself of Truth — the sixth album in their discography since their formation in 2014 — the band naturally hopes to climb another rung. Like its predecessor, this album will also be released by Century Media Records. Previously this was Unique Leader Records.

The battle plan hasn’t changed much, although the sting is in the tail this time. Ironically, the album starts off a bit weak with the title track (as clichés are everywhere) and the breakdown seems misplaced later. The tempo picks up considerably at times, for example, in the piercing chops and pounding of HELLMUSTFEARME (just stop with the caps lock titles!) and the versatile and varied Clouded Retinas (a wonderful collaboration with Lorna Shore‘s Will Ramos). A huge compliment to frontman David Simonich is that the contrast in vocals with Will Ramos isn’t all that great. Simonich, too, is capable of wringing a wide variety of sounds from his throat and this makes all the difference in this genre. The nimble guitar riffs and sharp tempo swings during Iron Sacrament also pack a powerful punch. During these songs, Signs Of The Swarm doesn’t fail to keep going and doesn’t just use breakdowns to create some contrast.

As mentioned before, the sting is in the tail on To Rid Myself of Truth. From the atmospheric and melodic Forcing To Forget, they chart a slightly different course that pays off both interestingly and well. Sarkazein also features melodic and haunting guitar parts with an eye for tasty grooves and even some sampling. Because the foundation of these songs is somewhat calmer, Simonich’s all-encompassing voice shines through even more. With the metalcore-esque Fear And Judgement and Creator, we also hear a different sound than we’re used to from the past. There’s a bit more lightheartedness to the music, and other elements are more present as a result. It makes for interesting listening material that truly sounds distinctive. That last part isn’t a bad thing of course in a crowded and active genre.

In my opinion, it would have been even more interesting if these four songs had simply been spread throughout the track list. As it stands, it feels a bit detached from the rest of the work towards the end. That’s the only criticism, though, because ultimately all that’s left is a perfectly good deathcore album. Signs Of The Swarm delivers again with To Rid Myself of Truth  and can confidently continue to sell out venues. Hopefully, the Americans will dare to extend the creative impulses of the last four songs in future work. All in all: deathcore fans should definitely visit their local record store.
