Eisenkult – Die Hölle Ist Hier

Eisenkult has been around since 2020 and has released almost as many records in the short span of five years. The music of this German trio is scorched on black metal but has its links to folk and pagan in a completely unique way. Die Hölle Ist Hier is the successor to the very strong Vulgäre, Deutsche Hassmuzik that also bore some hooliganesque characteristics in its performance. The gentlemen Valfor, Baptist and Tiwaz who still form the backbone of this band know each other through and through and also from other bands such as Mavorim, Atronos and Totenwache. All f these bands operate under the flag and pennant of the German Purity Through Fire.

The label is putting real effort into it because this fourth album of this trio will be released in various physical formats such as a classic tape, CD or vinyl but also an A5 digipack. As a band I would be very happy with that.

You can hear and feel that folky, paganesque sound right away in the opening track Vigil, a cautious acoustic event and specific clean vocals take you back to times long past. To then catapult you back to the present because the main melody in Ich wünsch’ mir alles weg sounds quite poppy in its first seconds, but with that blastbeat and abrasive voice that feeling quickly disappears. Fortunately, the three Germans then smear the whole thing with everything that is dirty, filthy and greasy. For example, in Der Teufel selbst you hear a collection of moist and draughty gore riffs that are delivered in a nice, meandering, spiced-up way. You always have to take into account playful and frisky keyboard playing. Things are a bit less wild in Hassgesang. Strumming guitar violence is alternated with clean vocals that we also heard in a different variant in the opening track.

With the title track we are just over halfway through the album. Thundering double bass, again those medieval-sounding vocals and that narrative guitar palette you can’t escape with this Eisenkult. The hooliganesque game that was clearly a bit more on the previous album is a bit less noticeable on this latest album. Although on Von Gott gehasst and Töte Mich that unruly evil comes to the forehand a bit more. Eisenkult remains Eisenkult: a band with its own sound and completely own approach to making black metal and I can only applaud that. Die Hölle Ist Hier is in comparison to previous material just a progression on the same path. Strong!
